How to Fix BCD Error Code 0xc0000098 on Windows 11

Recently few Windows 11 users reported the Error Code 0xc0000098 on their Windows 11 which prevented them from operating the system smoothly. Fix 1: Repair Boot Configuration Data

The first attempt to resolve the BCD Error Code 0xc0000098 on Windows 11 is repairing the Master Boot Record, Boot Sector and Boot Configuration Data. To do so,

  • Firstly, you need to insert Windows 11 Bootable Drive/ Windows 11 Installation DVD on your PC
  • Then turn OFF your device and after a few seconds, turn it ON.
  • While system booting click on Del, Delete, F2 to F8, F10, or F12; based on your PC Motherboard the key varies. (You can check your Motherboard manual for detailed information).
  • If you entered into the BIOS screen, go to Boot->set Bootable USB drive and first boot device-> Save changes and exit from the screen.
  • Now your system will restart and go to the Windows Installation Setup window.
  • Inside the new screen, click on Next-> select Repair your computer-> click Troubleshoot->select Command Prompt.
  • Further, type the following commands in the new screen and press Enter after each command,

bootrec /fixboot

  • Finally, exit from the screen and click on Continue to finish the process.
  • Now you can see whether the error message is eliminated from your screen or not.

Fix 2: Run Startup Repair

Another solution to resolve the BCD Error Code 0xc0000098 is running the Startup Repair. To do so,

  • Firstly, follow the above-given steps to reach the Windows Installation Setup screen-> click on Repair your computer option.
  • Then select Troubleshoot-> choose Startup Repair->click on Windows 11 operating system.
  • Once the repair process gets completed, see if the issue is resolved for you or not.

Fix 3: Run SFC Scan

If any system files get damaged on your Windows 11 then also you will receive BCD Error Code 0xc0000098 prompt. In this situation, you need to run SFC Scan to repair those corrupted files and see the result. To do so,

  • Firstly, go to the Windows Installation Setup screen-> click on Repair your computer option.
  • Then select Troubleshoot-> choose Command Prompt and type or paste the following command and press Enter,

Fix 4: Run CHKDSK Scan

If the above solution does not help you then you can run CHKDSK Scan to resolve the same error. To do so,

  • Firstly, go to the Windows Installation Setup screen-> click on Repair your computer option.
  • Then select Troubleshoot-> choose Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter,

chkdsk C: /f /r /x

  • Here you can replace C: with your Windows Installation drive letter.
  • Once done, you will be free from said error.

Fix 5: Perform Clean Installation

If none of the above solutions helps you then you can perform a clean installation to repair the BCD Error Code 0xc0000098 on Windows 11. To do so,

  • Firstly, Boot to Windows Installation Media-> Next->Install Now-> tick I Accept->Next-> Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
  • Then delete all the partitions from the disk which you need to install Windows.
  • Open each Partition-> select Delete-> click OK when Windows notification appears.
  • Repeat the same step for every drive except Unallocated space and click on OK.
  • Now inside the Windows Setup screen, select Language/Keyboard layout, remove the external storage drive and click on OK.
  • Once done, your system will restart automatically and the issue will get solved for you.
