Fix: Windows 11 Screen Dimming Issue

Microsoft’s latest OS, Windows 11, comes with several enhancements in designs, security and advanced features. However, as the new Operating System, we can expect some bugs and inconsistencies in Windows 11. As we said, nowadays, several users point out the Windows 11 screen is dimming; as a result, the screen’s brightness level dwindles to varying degrees. 

The screen dimming problem affects gamers the most; the brightness of the screen decreases when playing Windows games. Similarly, the same problem turns a lot of games very dark. Whatever the reasons, we have listed some solutions in this article to overcome the screen dimming issue in Windows 11. Let’s have a look,

Fix 1: Disable Monitor Auto-Dimming Feature:

The first step in resolving the screen dimming issue in Windows 11 is to turn off the monitor’s auto-dimming feature. However, if you enable the same feature, it may cause the screen brightness to dim. In this scenario, go to the PC’s VDU manual and check the monitor’s auto-dimming feature status. If it is enabled, you will receive instructions on how to disable it from the same manual.

Fix 2: Deactivate Windows Game Mode:

Simply disabling the Windows Game Mode will help you get over the screen dimming issue in Windows 11. To do so, 

  • Firstly, press Windows + I altogether to launch the Settings app.
  • Then inside Settings, go to the Gaming option.
  • Now in the newly appeared screen, click on Game Mode and turn off the toggle beside the same option.
  • Once done, restart the same and check for improvement.

Fix 3: Disable Adaptive Brightness:

If you disable adaptive brightness through settings, this will help you to easily fix the Windows 11 screen dimming problem. To do so,

  • Firstly, type edit power plan in the Windows 11 search bar and open the Edit Power Plan Control Panel window.
  • Then in the newly opened window, click on Change advanced power settings link.
  • Now in the Power Options window, select and double-click over the Display option.
  • Then again, double click over the Enable adaptive brightness option.
  • There toggle Off beside the options On battery and Plugged in adaptive brightness.
  • Then click on Apply button and OK to save the changes.
  • Once done, restart the system and check for improvement.

Fix 4: Disable Night Light:

If the above trick does not resolve the Screen dimming issue, then you should disable the Night Light feature and check for improvement. To do so,

  • Firstly, open the Start menu and select the Settings app.
  • Inside the Settings app, select System from the left pane menu.
  • Now choose Display and toggle off beside the option Night light option.
  • Once done, restart the system and check now the said issue is resolved for you or not.

Fix 5: Update Driver:

Another fix to get rid of the Windows 11 screen dimming issue is updating the Graphics driver installed on your system. to do so,

  • Firstly, in the search bar, type Device Manager and open the relevant search result.
  • Then inside the Device Manager window, expand the option Display adapters.
  • Now right-click over your Graphics driver and select Update driver from the drop-down menu.
  • Once done, check for improvement.

If the issue persists, then again open Device Manager->Display adapters-> right-click on your driver and select Uninstall device. Once you uninstalled it, reinstall the driver from its official website. Make sure to download the driver compatible with your system (32-bit, 64-bit).

Fix 6: Reboot System Clean-Boot:

Any of the above solutions do not help you; then, you need to clean boot the system to avoid the screen dimming issue. To do so, 

  • Firstly, open the Start menu and in the search box, type System configuration and open the relevant search result.
  • Inside the System Configuration window, select the General tab from the top menu and select the radio button beside the Selective startup option.
  • Then untick the checkbox beside the Load startup items and tick the checkbox beside Load system services.
  • Now move to the Services tab from the top horizontal menu, tick the checkbox beside Hide all Microsoft services, and click on the Disable all button.
  • And click on Apply and OK to save the changes and restart the system.

If the issue is resolved now, then the screen dimming issue is caused by unnecessary background processes, services etc. Hereafter you can restore the boot configuration,

  • Go to System Configuration->General tab->Load startup items.
  • The move to the Services tab and Enable all the services you disabled earlier. If you find any problematic services, remove them from the system.
