Fix: Snipping Tool Not Working on Windows 11

Fix 1: Use Old Version Snipping Tool:

If you upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10, then you are able to use the previous version of the snipping tool to get over the same issue. The old version tool will be available on Boot Driver. You can follow the below-given steps to use the previous version of the tool.

Note: Windows 11 will store your previous installation up to 10 days from the date of the upgrade. 

  • Firstly, go to this path, C:/Windows.old/Windows/System32/
  • Then search and locate the SnippingTool.exe file and copy it to your clipboard.
  • Now go to this path, C:/Windows/System32/, and paste the above-copied file in this folder.
  • Again go to this path, C:\Windows.old\Windows\System32\en-US\ and copy the SnippingTool.exe.mui file.
  • Then go to C:\Windows\System32\en-US\ folder and paste the above file here.
  • If any prompt appears on the screen, you need to replace all the files.
  • Now press Windows + Shift + S altogether and then click on the +New option. Here you will launch the old version Snipping tool, and you will no longer get the said error message.

Fix 2: Refresh PC:

Another solution to get rid of the “Snipping Tool Not Working on Windows 11” issue is refreshing your Windows 11. However, this is the official solution from Microsoft, and you can apply it by following the steps below,

  • Firstly, press Windows + I altogether to launch the Settings app.
  • Then select the Windows Update option from the left pane of the Settings app.
  • Now click on Advanced Options and click on Recovery from the Additional options window.
  • There click on the Reset PC button beside Reset this PC option. 
  • Then select the Keep my files option on the newly opened screen.
  • Finally, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reset your system smoothly.
  • Once done, check for improvement.

Fix 3: Reinstall Snipping Tool:

If any of the above two solutions do not work for you, then you need to reinstall the Snipping Tool to escape from the “Snipping Tool Not Working on Windows 11” issue. To do so,

  • Firstly, in your Windows 11 search box, type PowerShell and launch the relevant search result.
  • Then open the PowerShell window with administrative access.
  • Now inside the PowerShell Command Prompt window, type or copy then paste the following command and then press Enter,

get-appxpackage *Microsoft.ScreenSketch* | remove-appxpackage

  • The above command will remove the Snipping Tool from your system. 
  • Then restart the system and once the system starts, relaunch the PowerShell window with administrative access and type the following command and press Enter,

Get-AppXPackage *Microsoft.ScreenSketch* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

  • Once done, exit from the PowerShell and you can use Snipping tool without any hassle.
